A beautiful perennial that is loved by pollinators. It is deer resistant and tolerant to drought. With roots that are big and strong, it is not only tolerant to clay soil but can help break it up a bit as well.
Traditionally, comfrey leaves and roots have been used as a poultice to treat rashes, swelling, cuts and bruises. It is considered toxic however to ingest.
We love comfrey for it's permaculture fame as a compost bio-activator. Add fast-growing comfrey leaves (chopped up or brewed as a tea) to your compost pile to give it a kick start that's full of nutrients.
